The Gift of the Sea: A Jeweller Gives You a Closer Look at Cultured Pearls

Pearls are perhaps one of the world’s most wondrous creations.

For many years, these exquisite organic gems have been adored and adorned by women all around the world. Though white is the colour often associated with pearls, these also come in pink, green, and black.

Natural pearls, however, are extremely rare. Out of the 8,000 species of molluscs, about 20 of them are able to make pearls on a regular basis. Furthermore, these molluscs don’t often generate stones that can be used for jewellery.

As a way to produce more pearls for jewellery-making, Kokichi Mikimoto introduced cultured pearls in 1893. With this method, pearls were readily made available to women everywhere. Kokichi Mikimoto’s legacy lives on with his brand, Mikimoto.
